Locals' Week a success

Hundreds of Rotorua residents recently got to jump out of planes, roll down hills in big plastic balls and soak up local history and culture, thanks to a new initiative by Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing and local tourism operators. According to rotoruaNZ.com, Locals’ Week, which ran for one week in November, offered substantial discounts to Rotorua residents visiting local activities and attractions.

DOC moves into CHCH i-site

In a move aimed at giving visitors to the region better access to information about public conservation land, parks and walkways, the Department of Conservation has moved its visitor centre from its former office location in Hereford Street into Christchurch’s i-SITE Visitor Centre in Cathedral Square.

Contiki chooses Dunedin

Tourism Dunedin is celebrating the news that Contiki Holidays is to reinstate Dunedin on its itineraries, bringing an extra 5000 tourists into the city each year. The Otago Daily Times says Contiki operations manager Murray Scott has confirmed the tour company would include Dunedin as part of its South Island and New Zealand tours from October.

Kapiti Coast direct from Auckland

Air New Zealand subsidiary Air Nelson will begin direct 70-minute flights between Auckland and the Kapiti Coast’s Paraparaumu airport later this year. Starting Labour Weekend, Air Nelson will operate its 50-seat Bombardier Q300 aircraft on three return flights a day during the week, and three return flights over the weekends.

Mega-Hangi for 2011 Kawhia Kai Festival

Aotearoa’s largest collective hangi will be put down to feed the thousands expected at this year’s Kawhia Kai Festival being held on Saturday, 05FEB as part of Waitangi Day celebrations. Hangi experts at four local Kawhia marae are now preparing the huge fire pits, cooking stones, and food baskets to hold the mountains of pork, chicken, beef, and vegetables to feed the 10,000 visitors expected, says Festival organiser, Hinga Whiu.
